Chapter 4: Radio: "Building a crystal radio out of household items. "

- A very nice walkthru of radio components, possibly using alternative components.
MAKE: Blog: DIY Pickle Light: "DIY Pickle Light

I have always wanted to try this!
1. Get a pickle.
2. Jam electrical wires into opposite ends of said pickle.
3. Plug wires into AC socket.
Notice, 'Plug in...' comes LAST! Keep in mind, you are dealing with LIVE AC! Use common sense and all possible caution! I grabbed ahold of one of the wires while discussing it infront of a group of Physics Pholks at Rutgers a few years back and got a rude awakening! Made the demo much more interesting for the audience, but ruined my day (not to mention my shorts...). - Link "

- Ha! I occationally quick-fried an eel this way. No lights though :-/

CruiseControl Home:
"CruiseControl is a framework for a continuous build process. It includes, but is not limited to, plugins for email notification, Ant, and various source control tools. A web interface is provided to view the details of the current and previous builds.
CruiseControl is distributed under a BSD-style license and is free for use. CruiseControl adheres to an open source model and therefore makes the source code freely available.
CruiseControl is maintained and developed by a group of dedicated volunteers.
What is Continuous Integration?
Continuous Integration by Martin Fowler and Matthew Foemmel.
An important part of any software development process is getting reliable builds of the software. Despite it's importance, we are often surprised when this isn't done. We stress a fully automated and reproducible build, including testing, that runs many times a day. This allows each developer to integrate daily thus reducing integration problems."

QEMU - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:

"QEMU is free software written by Fabrice Bellard that implements a fast processor emulator, allowing a user to run one operating system within another one. It is similar to projects such as Bochs, VMware Workstation and PearPC, but has several features these lack, including increased speed on x86, and support for multiple architectures in-progress. By using dynamic translation it achieves a reasonable speed while being easy to port on new host CPUs."

Speed should be comparable, maybe a bit slower than VMware - but it's free!

- and you can even get a (linux) system to boot from an USB-stick:

QEMU-Puppy - A Personal Portable Computer

- and, it even seems you can use QEMU for creating a shell for VMware Player (?)

Creating an XP Pro VM for the free VMware Player

(the hack comes from here:
How-to: VMware player modification

This shows how to create an empty VMware shell, that you then can install using the free VMware Player

MCE WebGuide 3:

MCE WebGuide™ was created for Microsoft® Windows® XP Media Center Edition users to provide remote Internet access to scheduling and the management of recorded programs on the Media Center Edition (MCE) PC. Just install WebGuide on your Media Center PC and access it from any machine that has a web browser.

MCE WebGuide features:

Allows you to schedule recordings of shows anytime and anywhere from a web browser.
Installs quickly and runs with the familiar easy-to-use MCE interface.
Accesses your own MCE PC which means live scheduling without delays.
Provides LAN-based access to recorded TV shows via networked PC's with playback in Windows Media Player.
An improved homepage that provides quick access to recent and upcoming recordings.
Improved guide listing that scrolls in-place, rather than scrolling the whole browser. This makes it very easy to get program info without having to scroll to the bottom of the page.
A much improved search interface. Similar to Media Center, you can now get your search results grouped by show rather than just sorted by date/time.
Ability to set manual recordings and adjust the settings of scheduled recordings.
PocketPC and Smartphone enabled EPG. "
SpeedFan - Access temperature sensor in your computer

"SpeedFan is a freeware program that monitors voltages, fan speeds and temperatures in computers with hardware monitor chips. SpeedFan can even access S.M.A.R.T. info for those hard disks that support this feature and show hard disk temperatures too, if supported. SpeedFan supports SCSI disks too. SpeedFan can even change the FSB on some hardware (but this should be considered a bonus feature). At the lowest level, SpeedFan is an hardware monitor software that can access digital temperature sensors, but its main feature is that it can change fan speeds (depending on the capabilities of your sensor chip and your hardware) according to the temperatures inside your pc, thus reducing noise.
